Magick has always proposed something far more interesting:
That there are places upstream of the visible result where change may still be possible.
The image.
The meaning.
The relationship between things.
The pattern.
The imaginal.
The choices and assumptions we continually feed back into the system.
Perhaps even those strange territories we call fate and destiny.
The deepest changes are made at the causal level,
before pattern becomes circumstance.
Which raises the obvious question.
WHERE CAN I INTERVENE?
This may be the more useful way to think about your reality.
Not:
How do I make something different happen?
But:
Where in the process by which something happens can I intervene?
At the level of behaviour?
At the level of belief?
At the level of image?
Through ritual?
Through symbol?
Through timing?
Through correspondence?
Through the relationships that connect one thing to another?
Or even by changing the pattern we ourselves keep putting back into the system?
Suddenly, things we have been exploring separately begin to look rather different.

Over the last few years, we've accumulated quite a toolkit.

Perform it at this time.

Combine these particular things.
Again and again, the magical tradition gives us extraordinarily precise instructions.
But ask the question one level deeper:
WHY THESE THINGS?
Why this plant and not another?
Why this colour?
Why this planet?
Why this number?
Why this image?
Why this hour?
What makes these apparently unrelated things belong together?
Because if we could understand that...
Perhaps we wouldn't simply have recipes.
We might begin to understand how to construct them.

The Renaissance magical tradition inherited an extraordinary idea:

That the universe is not simply a collection of separate objects.
Things participate in other things.
Through affinity. Resemblance. Quality. Number. Image. Meaning. Celestial influence. Correspondence.

HOW ARE THINGS CONNECTED?
Because before we can deliberately construct an intervention,
we need to understand what can be connected to what... and why.
CAN WE CONSTRUCT AN INTERVENTION?
Instead of copying an old recipe, could we learn enough about its underlying architecture to design one?
Begin with an intention.
Identify its relationships.
Find the appropriate symbols, materials, images, numbers, timings and actions.
Construct the operation.
Perform it.
Observe.
Adjust.
Test again.
